my only moral responsibility in having had an abortion is to speak up for myself. in doing so, i hope to inspire other women to come forward and speak about their experiences, too.
we vilify women for choosing an abortion, and yet this country does nothing for single mothers, working mothers, or mothers struggling in poverty. opponents of abortion and reproductive rights do everything they can to destroy sex education in schools, creating generation after generation of uninformed women and men who more often than not find themselves faced with an unplanned pregnancy. our government skillfully prohibits access to safe and legal abortion with bureaucratic red tape, creating unrealistic hurdles for women - hurdles i can't imagine every 14-year-old or 40-year-old woman can overcome. "yes, abortion is legal, but hey, good luck trying to get one" is the message - an ugly and undeniable fact of life here in the united states.
there is nothing in my arguments above that hasn't already been stated over and over by pro-choice advocates. but it is my own opinion, and deep conviction, that abortion is one of the most humane and loving choices women can make. i absolutely struggled with my decision to have an abortion. it was a life-changing experience to learn i was unexpectedly pregnant, one that forced me to take a long, hard look at myself. after careful and heartbreaking consideration of my immediate future, i decided that i would be a mother one day, but that today was not that day. i chose an abortion now, so that i would be better prepared to raise a child in the future.
